have you tried handbrake. Its open source and is basically a graphical tool to do a lot of thing that mencoder and other commandline apps do. If your really just adding subtitles handbrake should be able to do it.

Why don't you try AviDemux for embedding subtitles on a video file?

It is possible to use UTF based subtitles with spumux,
you must add characterset="UTF-8" in your spum.dat file,

and use some adequate font file in your .spumux directory

I have had some spotty success with Avidemux. Say, how does one rip a KDEnlive project with subtitles anyway?

Thank you, that was a very complete review. I have also tried Jubler a Java-based subtitler, but with not much success (it requires mplayer to preview films, but does not recognize my mplayer installation.) I am going to try Aegisub now.

At first I also thought Kino was difficult to use for larger projects. Now I admit I was wrong. Actually it's extremely easy, since you easily can merge or split scenes, add or adjust sound and add different kinds of effect. When I discovered the options and how to use them I did tend to get overly enthusiastic with the result of to many added "special effects" to my films. I don't write this in an attempt to protect the holy grail of open-source; it's more of a reflection about the difficulty to develop tools that fits the mind set of everyone.
